If you want to do this as a school science project or just keep it for posterity, you can spray it with a fixative or hairspray. Leave the fungus covered overnight and by the next day, the spores will have dropped from the cap onto the paper. Cover the mushroom with the glass container to prevent it from drying out. Remove the stem from the mushroom of your choice and upend it, placing the cap spore side down onto the two pieces of paper with one half on white and one half on black. Put the two colors of paper side by side. Using both will enable you to see the spores regardless of their shade.) (The purpose of two colors of paper is because sometimes spores are light colored and sometimes dark. ![]() Also, you’ll need a piece of white paper, a piece of black paper, and a glass container that can be inverted over the mushroom. Make sure it is a mature specimen, one with gills readily apparent. To harvest mushroom spores by making a spore print, you need edible mushrooms - any variety will do but, as mentioned, the gill types are easiest and most available at the local grocers. A spore syringe is another method for collecting spore, but we will get back to that in a minute. The spore print can also be used by the non-scientist to grow some succulent fungi suitable for inclusion on a pizza, or what have you. A spore print makes this possible without having to use a high powered microscope. They use the characteristic color, shape, texture and pattern of the released spores to identify the mushroom. What the heck is a spore print, you ask? Making a spore print is a method used by real mycologists, not wannabes like myself, to identify a fungus. The most common method for harvesting spores from mushrooms is the making of a spore print. Intrigued? So how to harvest mushroom spores, then? ![]() Gill mushrooms are the easiest from which to harvest spores, but with some experimentation, all types can be harvested. Each type of fungi has a different spore type and releases them in unique patterns dependent upon the form of the underside of the mushroom cap. The reproductive bodies of fungi, mushrooms’ purpose in life is to produce spores, or seeds. The following information on harvesting spores from mushrooms has me pretty excited! Spore Collection Techniques I sure would love to be able to grow my own edible mushrooms too, but the cost of commercial mushroom growing kits has kept me from trying. I generally purchase mine from the grocer or local farmers market, so I’m not familiar with spore collection techniques. ![]() thanks bud □.I love mushrooms, but I am certainly no mycologist. Anyway e mail me back if you have any pointers. And you’re right working slow is the way to accomplish the goals slow and steady wins the race. I see I have to be a lot more contaminant free with the jars. it took about 1 1/2 months to cake and everything went well except for the jars. I did my first mushroom run with albino golden teachers and Amazonian psilo □. It’s sun it’s moon it’s h2o it’s nitrogen or carbon content and I’m 32 so for years I’ve been wanting to go legal. Then I was growing pot and realized in a sense I was this plants System. Just with different percentiles of particular behavioral characteristics. I went on a quest of understanding who I am. Is there anyway you can help me find myself in the position you did that one summer’s day lol. Luckily, stir plates are pretty cheap (~$25) and with a little research and time, you can easily build your own using a computer fan and some magnets. You could twirl your culture by hand everyday but this is definitely not ideal. Again, buying a small syringe of liquid culture from a professional and then expanding it yourself sidesteps this challenge.Īnother challenge is that to keep your liquid culture vigorous and healthy, you need to agitate and oxygenate the culture, which requires a stir plate. But for the beginner, this requires a sterile space and some basic lab equipment and skills. That’s why reputable vendors test their cultures before sale. Then there’s the fact that it can be difficult to identify contamination in mushroom liquid cultures. ![]() That’s why we recommend beginner growers purchase a mushroom liquid culture syringe from experienced mycologists like Paul. For one, when you first make a liquid culture, it is prone to contamination. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a couple drawbacks of mushroom liquid cultures. What are some of the challenges of working with mushroom liquid cultures?
